Sutcliffe initially attacked women and girls in residential areas, but appeared to have moved to red light districts because he was attracted by the vulnerability of prostitutes.
He carried out murders over five years, including women who were not prostitutes. He confessed to being the perpetrator, saying that the voice of God had sent him on a mission to kill prostitutes. At his trial, Sutcliffe pleaded not guilty to murder on grounds of diminished responsibility , but he was convicted of murder on a majority verdict. Following his conviction, Sutcliffe began using his mother’s maiden name of Coonan.
West Yorkshire Police were criticised for their failure to catch Sutcliffe despite having interviewed him nine times in the course of their five-year investigation. Because of the sensational nature of the case, the police handled an exceptional amount of information, some of it misleading including the Wearside Jack hoax recorded message and letters purporting to be from the “Ripper”.

When you attend for your first appointment with your midwife, you will be offered a range of important tests to screen for certain conditions that may affect your pregnancy. You will be given a booklet that explains these tests as well to ensure that the decisions you make about screening are informed. There is an easy read and an audio version available on this link as well.
It is important for you to be aware that ultrasound scanning is a form of screening and is done to perform important checks on the health and development of your baby.

When a pregnant woman is asked to attend an antenatal clinic at a hospital, it is usually for routine examinations, tests and an ultrasound scan, which helps to make sure both the woman and her baby are healthy, as well as providing an estimated date for the birth. Hospital appointments often last an hour or less, but some may last a full day or require an overnight stay. Pregnant women are referred into the service by their midwife or GP.
Antenatal care monitors the health of pregnant women throughout their pregnancy, checking on the development of their baby and making preparations for the birth. If you are pregnant then you are likely to be cared for by a midwife, who may arrange to meet you for the first time at a local clinic or a nearby hospital. An ultrasound scan is undertaken by staff specially trained in using ultrasound equipment. Routine antenatal appointments and scans are available Monday to Friday, between 8am and 5.
Overnight antenatal care, providing 24 hour observation and assessment, is available at some hospitals for women experiencing complications during pregnancy and requiring specialist care. If you are attending for an ultrasound scan, please drink water or other liquids prior to your appointment as a full bladder is needed for a good scan. Who is the service for?

How early can you have a dating scan
It is important that you see a Midwife as early as possible in your pregnancy. Women have their first and longest Antenatal appointment between 6 – 12 weeks of pregnancy with their Midwife. This is called a “booking” visit and involves questions about your health, any illnesses or previous pregnancies. This helps us to see if there may be any possible problems during your pregnancy and allows us to tailor your Antenatal care for your specific needs. At the start of your pregnancy, during your booking visit, your Midwife will make an assessment based on your previous and current medical and pregnancy history.
If you have not had any problems, then the Midwife will state that you are low risk and will be suitable for Midwifery-led care.

Im a bit of a lurker but wanted to comment as no one else has! I live in Bradford and am pretty sure that you cant find out the sex there either I have a son already but decided to deliver in Leeds I think it is because of the high population of the Asian community and they tend to prefer boys for religeous reasons???? I am only repeating what I have been told and hope nobody takes offence!
If not, you can request to have the scan at a different hospital. I had my 20 week scan at Dewsbury and they were happy to tell us the sex of the baby. It’s true about Bradford though!
